Frequently Asked Questions

I work best with clients who are able and willing to explore their inner emotional world, even if that can sometimes feel unfamiliar or challenging. These Frequently Asked Questions are here to help you get a clear sense of whether my approach is right for you.

What is Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and how is it different from ‘talk therapy’?

EFT is a depth-oriented therapy that helps you work directly with your emotions, not just talk about them. While traditional talk therapy often focuses on discussing situations or problem-solving, EFT helps you access, process, and shift emotional patterns that have been stuck for a long time. This emotional work can create deep, lasting change that cognitive insight alone often can’t reach.

Do I need to have a specific diagnosis or trauma to benefit from EFT?

Not at all. Many people I work with have complex or longstanding patterns rooted in early experiences, but you don’t need a formal diagnosis. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or keep repeating painful patterns despite knowing “why,” EFT can help you move beyond intellectual understanding into emotional healing.

When is regular talk therapy (or solution-focused counselling) more appropriate than seeing you?

While some clients initially come to therapy during a difficult life event, what matters is your willingness to explore the deeper emotional patterns underneath. If you’re looking for a space simply to talk through day-to-day frustrations or have regular casual conversations (a bit like chatting with a friend), my approach likely won’t feel helpful. The work I offer is for people who are ready to go deeper — to gently explore longstanding patterns, emotional wounds, and relational dynamics that may be contributing to your current struggles.

Do you give strategies and tools in your sessions?

While we may discuss practical tools when they genuinely support your process, my focus isn’t on providing lists of coping strategies. If you’re primarily seeking advice, techniques, or quick solutions, my approach may not be the best fit. Our work is about helping you understand and shift the emotional patterns underneath your struggles, so change happens from the inside out.

How long will therapy take? Do you offer short-term therapy?

Depth work takes time, and it’s different for everyone. Most of my clients attend regularly (usually fortnightly) for a period of months as we gently explore and process their experiences. For some, the work continues longer as deeper layers unfold, but there’s no expectation of open-ended or indefinite therapy. What matters most is consistent engagement so we can build safety, trust, and meaningful progress together. I don’t offer short-term or occasional sessions, as this type of work needs steady momentum to be effective.

I’ve done lots of self-help, coaching, or cognitive work before — but I still feel stuck. Is this for me?

Yes. Many of my clients are highly insightful and have done significant personal work. But insight alone doesn’t always shift emotional patterns that were wired in during early life. EFT helps you connect with and process the emotions that sit underneath those patterns, allowing transformation.

Will therapy feel intense or retraumatising?

This kind of work often feels emotionally intense — that’s part of processing emotions that may not have been fully felt before. But intensity is not the same as being retraumatised. My role is to help you safely access and work through emotions at a pace that feels tolerable and contained. While strong feelings may come up, we work together to keep the process grounded, safe, and manageable, so you’re not overwhelmed or destabilised.

Do I have to revisit my past?

Yes — often we do explore early experiences, because much of the work involves understanding where emotional patterns were first formed. But revisiting the past doesn’t mean reliving it. We approach these experiences with care, at a pace that feels safe, contained, and grounded. The focus is on healing and integrating what has not yet been fully processed, not on re-living trauma.

Do you offer diagnosis?

I can provide diagnostic assessments and reports when it is clinically appropriate or required for third parties (such as GPs, specialists, or government agencies). However, my primary focus is on emotional healing and processing, not on labelling. Diagnosis may be part of the work when needed, but my aim is always to support meaningful change, not simply assign a diagnosis.

Do you offer in-person or telehealth appointments?

I offer both in-person sessions at my practice and telehealth appointments via secure video platform. Some clients choose one or the other depending on location or preference, and others move between both as needed. We can discuss what works best for you when we begin.

What kinds of issues do you help people with?

I work with adults who want to explore long-standing patterns such as:

  • Childhood trauma and emotional neglect
  • Sexual abuse and boundary violations
  • Shame and self-criticism
  • People-pleasing and emotional caretaking
  • Difficulty setting or feeling safe with boundaries
  • Identity confusion and relational trauma
  • Betrayal trauma and parental minimisation of harm
  • Anxiety and perfectionism rooted in early experiences
  • Emotional disconnection or numbness
  • Repetitive life patterns that feel stuck

If you’re ready to do deep work and gently unpack these patterns, this may be the right space for you.

Do you bulk bill, or offer Medicare-rebate-only therapy?

No, I do not offer bulk billing or Medicare-only gap-free sessions. While Medicare rebates are available, there is always a gap fee. This allows me to work in the way that best supports long-term, depth-oriented therapy, without the constraints of short-term models.

Am I the kind of client you're best suited to work with?

The people who benefit most from this work are those who feel ready (or nearly ready) to explore their emotional world, even if that feels unfamiliar or challenging at times. You don’t need to have everything figured out, but you do need to be open to looking beneath surface-level patterns and willing to feel what comes up. If you’re primarily looking for advice, quick solutions, or short-term coping strategies, my approach likely won’t meet your needs. But if you’re drawn to meaningful, lasting emotional work that can create deep change, this may be the right space for you.
